Final Fantasy V Four Job Fiesta 2017 Classic Jobs Part VII
The eighth session of this run was played on August 3, 2017.
We are in Meatfort. Really, I think it looks less meaty in this version of the game.
I started with a couple of battles against Reflect Mages, knowing that the Reflect Rings I could steal from them might trivialize an otherwise challenging Exdeath fight. I ended up with four Reflect Rings before Gilgamesh.
Gilgamesh started by halving Krile's level. I didn't like that but if I had to happen to someone I guess it's best that it's her. Then he did it to Krile again a couple of turns later. Oh well, she's mostly throwing up buffs. There was another Discord and then a Time Slip against Bartzs; Gilgamesh was relentless in lowering my levels. Despite that, Faris stole his Genji Helm.

I loved the part where GIlgamesh said, "This is far from the strongest of swords!" because I said it verbatim before he did, and I hadn't played this game in years. It's amazing that I remembered the exact phrasing.
We won, despite the level-altering shenanigans. This was mostly due to Lenna's strong Bio spells.

Against Exdeath, I wore Reflect Rings, as planned. I had Krile break a Staff of Light right away which may have been better saved for a later phase. Every so often, Exdeath would circumvent by defenses with moves like a 1500 damage Vacuum Wave or Earth Shaker. But my damage against him was strong, with a multi-reflected Firaga doing over 5000.
Attempt #1 didn't end well.

But the save point was immediately before. In attempt #2, while there were still rough patches, he ended up using more reflectable spells as I'd normally expect and it was easier to manage. That was probably the key difference.

Now, onto the merged world. Bartzs and Krile did their battle with the Antlion without me managing their equipment at all so they still had Reflect Rings on. Whoops. This jerk, like Gilgamesh, kept halving my levels until Bartzs'z sword strikes were doing under 400 damage. I guess if you can't beat it in a certain amount of time, it runs away? I had never seen that before!
I was a bit concerned about the gargoyles at the pyramid. I only have one character who has a competent offense, and it's single-target. I was wondering if it might be possible to silence them, so I had Krile try that. It didn't stick well. Instead I tried working out the timing for Bartsz and Faris' attacks. It worked out eventually; subsequent ones will be easier, once Lenna rejoins.
I recalled the general strategy of speeding through this dungeon and then returning after Lenna is available and I decided this was the right move. However, I don't know the dungeon so well that I can minimize all dangers, but I decided to skip many of the mostly-trapped treasure chests. For other enemies, Bartzs' sword attacks with Icebrand and/or Flametongue were very potent here; with Doublehand in use, he was regularly doing over 3000 damage. There's no boss at the end of the pyramid itself, and we got our tablet.
When we got into battle with the very well-dressed Melusine, I noted that this is one of those battles that Reflect Rings can make way easier, but I hadn't thought of it in advance. I decided to push through, since I've got access to Shell anyway. We also had access to quite a few elements between Bartsz's elemental swords. While I did manage this fight well, I think luck was on my side too.

The recording got really messy at about the 1:45 mark, where my mic and camera stopped work, game audio wasn't picked up, and the game crashed requiring a restart that didn't fix the other issues. I guess that doesn't really matter if you're reading this.
I got the airship and did some of the shorter, simpler tasks that the merged world gives you. For our first sealed weapons, we picked Assassin's Dagger, Excalibur, and Magus Rod. Magus Rod is a really nice one for empowering all of Lenna's spells with less menuing; there has been a lot of that in this playthrough.
Next, we went to the Phantom Village. There were no big, immediate benefits there other than Hermes Shoes and a minor armor upgrade.
We went back to the pyramid for a completion run at it now that Lenna has joined. Shortly after we went in, Lenna learned her final ability, MP +30%, which is welcome. Given we had already popped into Phantom Village, the biggest prizes for us here were the Protect Ring and the Gold Hairpin.
I had skipped the high-level magic in Phantom Village earlier, so after the pyramid I went back in there for the hidden high-level magic shop to get Arise, Dispel, Death and Osmose. Then I went to the Island Shrine. This dungeon is a bit weak in the treasure department, but we got (and equipped) the Rising Sun and another Protect Ring. Right at the end, after the final save point, we ran into a Tot Aevis. These guys are just massive bags of HP; we fought it for minutes before just fleeing.
Given that we have a black mage with a lot of MP, Wendigo was pretty easy. Each successful Firaga hit was monstrous.

We did the task of riding a yellow chocobo around the world to earn a Mirage Vest in the Phantom Village, we got the Magic Lamp, and our next three sealed weapon selections were Sage's Staff, Masamune (arbitrary; we can't use it) and Rune Axe (ditto). Sage's Staff can be useful in a few niche cases, at least. Finally, we saved outside of Fork Tower.
