This was played on October 31, 2017. Halloween special! And we're starting with the Phantom Forest and Phantom Train.

Before Phantom Forest, I fought a few more randoms. I thought it was a good idea to gain the next level before recruiting Gau. Despite the Halloweeniness of the Phantom Forest, we fought maybe two trivial random battles in there before making it to the train.

I realized in literally my first battle on the train against Whispers and Hazers that these battles were going to go much, much more slowly without Dispatch, Aurabolt, and Shurikens. It's not like there was any real, substantial difficulty or anything, but all of the typical best offense a player would have for this area wasn't there. Fighting a group of 3 Bombs also proved rather hazardous.

I recruited a ghost named Winky (which I believe was a failed Pac-Man reference).
Winky the ghost joins the team
Having Winky on the team is nice in that we get a fourth person, and they act as a black mage. However, they have no magic command (as they can never learn magic), no Possess command (as they are a black mage), a terrible physical attack, and their force-equipped Lich Ring makes Sabin's Pray command damage them. Winky really only worked to fill the slot and use items.

The Apparition monster-in-a-box was pretty tough without the team's original special moves. At one point it used Drain and absorbed Sabin's entire maxed HP. We won and got an additional Hyper Wrist, which is unexciting.

We had to conduct the battle with the Phantom Train without Suplex! (What's the point, right?)
Right away we fell victim to Evil Toot, with Cyan getting condemned and Shadow becoming a kappa. I wasn't sure we could cut it without those strong special abilities, but I knew we could fall back on Phoenix Down if we needed to. Eventually, with that spotlight-looking ability hitting twice close together, everyone died except Shadow with single-digit HP, so he did end up just using a Phoenix Down.
He can still throw... feathers!

Barely squeaking by through the Phantom Train without a particularly good offense, I really wasn't confident about Rizopas. My memories of Rizopas are, when that battle lasts a long time, he eventually uses the too-strong-for-this-part El Nino attack. I unequipped Shadow and then saved thinking I was likely to repeat this boss a few times.

It turned out there wasn't much to worry about! The battle with Rhizopas was pretty quick and straightforward. No El Nino!

We shopped for a few things in Mobliz and then did normal things to recruit Gau as our replacement thief, who joined at level 7. I expect Gau to start higher, but I forgot that my other characters' levels counted for level averaging. Gau has no rage abilities to gain from fighting on the Veldt, but we did have the ability to farm Green Berets, which are the strongest/best head equip at this point and they can't be purchased yet.

I also did the letter sending quest to get the Tintinabulum.

Won a second Green Beret!
I took time among the Veldt battles to earn just a second Green Beret; these can't be used by mages, so we don't need some large stock of them. We get a third from a chest shortly.

With that, we saved, and we'll do another scenario in the next one.
