This third session of this nearly inexplicable run was played on June 18, 2017.

We're entering the Earth Cave at level 10. There were a lot of fights on the way to the Vampire but nothing too deadly or unexpected; we made a lot of money beating up Ogres and Bulls. The Vampire was basically a non-event and we grabbed the Ruby. We did the Vampire still at level 10 but reached 11 almost immediately after.

I went from the Earth Cave to Sarda's Cave for the Rod, then went back to Melmond for another rest. We also grabbed a few more not-yet-usable level 5 magic spells. Melmond doesn't have an item shop, but I decided to try to push through the rest of the Earth Cave with my 30-or-so heal potions. We fought most battles and the party was gaining level 12 shortly before Lich.

On the last floor, we did have some pretty crappy luck that resulted in Lenna being killed by a pack of Mummies we were trying to escape from.
Lenna killed by Mummies.
But by that point, we were already committed to taking on Lich. We actually did get fairly close to the bottom of that stash of potions!

Against Lich, Galuf selected AICE but Lich used ICE2 before the spell was cast, resulting in a fairly bad first turn. Lich's spell cycle didn't do him any particular favours though, with the next two turns semi-wasted using an ineffective SLP2 and then FAST. Galuf used ALIT and then switched to HRM2, which did the trick on turn 5 - although the party was in rather bad shape. Bartz contributed somewhat but Faris was dead weight here.
Galuf defeated Lich using HRM2.

We went to Crescent Lake to get the Canoe, and then we went to the Castle of Ordeals. We know we will not be doing class change - doing so would change Bartz's class into some kind of VYUOKITE-like garbage - but the Zeus Gauntlet, Heal Staff, Gold Bracelet and Ice Sword are still very worth the trip and would make the next few dungeons considerably easier. Spellcasting items are especially valuable as a way to ensure Faris has something to do.

Our first battle in Ordeals was a rough one.
The entire party was petrified by the glance of a pack of Medusas.
Full-party petrification! And very quickly. I am pretty sure that was a new one for me.

The next attempt was a bit less stupid until the entire party other than Bartz was incinerated by Mancats, with Bartz also incinerated about two battles later by R.Goyles.

The third attempt was... stupider. Or maybe I should say I was stupider. I mis-menued and literally discarded the Zeus Gauntlet. Nope. Reset.

On the fourth attempt, I had a lot of luck on my side with regard to the kinds of encounters and such. I gave both the Zeus Gauntlet and Heal Staff to Faris to provide them with options. The party mostly gained level 13 and I encountered a single Zombie D on the way out of the castle. Then I did another shopping trip in Crescent Lake and headed for the Ice Cave.

I really debated whether to play the Ice Cave in this session or not but I said I'd take one run at it. It seemed really lucky at the beginning, although a lone Sorcerer did get the best of Bartz pretty early on. Galuf has a small number of level 5 spells now so he was able to get Bartz back on his feet. It didn't take long to encounter a few more Sorcerers who killed Bartz and Lenna before Galuf could retreat. Galuf could only revive one of them... so we chose Bartz. I directed the three remaining team members to fight a Frost D and claim the Ice Armor, but then I decided to forego most other out-of-the-way chests to see if I had a chance to get out alive.

We managed to get the Eye down on turn 1, but not before it used Glance to petrify Faris. I had exactly one Soft potion, so that was nice. Amazingly, though it wasn't easy, we got out of the Ice Cave with the Floater in one attempt!
The Eye is killed on turn 1!

We got an Airship! Lenna was dead for quite a while but the rest of the team is level 14. At the end of the session, I fought just a few extra battles to ensure I had enough money to buy the Bottle from the Oasis... lest I accidentally spend all that cash on spells.
