This fourth session of this first classic jobs playthrough was played on June 27, 2017.

We started with the volcano. If there is any interest in this playthrough as a variant, really it would essentially begin here, since I have everything I need to access the class change but can't/won't. That said, we're probably not going to see a lot of change from a vanilla playthrough here: Faris the thief is awful, but only as awful as a thief might normally be for Gurgo Volcano, and any difference will be more perceptable in some later dungeons. Galuf and Lenna, the mages, have their main difference being a lack of access to the highest-levelled spells but at levels like we've been trucking along with (~level 15 thus far) it will be ages before they earn level 7 and 8 spell slots.

I had purchased that Bottle at the end of the last session, so I decided to get chests in the volcano. This is probably stupid since a large proportion of treasure in here is various silver equipment, much of which I can't carry. Oh well. Bartz got a Flame Shield, which is useful for now.

Nothing noteworthy happened until we ran into the Red D guarding the Flame Armor.
Red D kicked our butts. I mean, mostly.
I was really excited to cast a bugged, in-battle HEL2 to get prepared for my fight with Kary, but the Red D got a very potent Blaze attack off on turn 1 that killed both Faris and Lenna. For that matter, even Bartz and Galuf were in danger but the HEL2 helped. Using HEL2, unfortunately, also uses up a level 5 charge, so even though I won I couldn't revive everybody. Faris was just going to stay face-down for the remainder of the volcano.

For my battle with Kary/Marilith, I got MUTE to work on turn 1. When Kary tried to use FIR2 on turn 3 it just fizzled, which is rather satisfying, and she was hit by DARK on that turn as well. She was debuffed and the fight felt very controlled, such that we were just waiting for Bartz (under the effect of FAST/Haste) to land the finishing blow, which I think was on turn 6. We would've been hard-pressed to lose.
Kary defeated rather decisively.

With the treasure I had amassed, I bought ProRings for Faris, Galuf and Lenna but couldn't also afford more Gold Bracelets yet. The Waterfall cave was pretty plain; we earned level 17 there. We did another little shop trip with the gains from the Waterfall including a second Gold Bracelet.

As most people would normally do, we went upward in the Sea Shrine before heading down to Kraken. We gained level 18 on the way up, and Bartz is now 4-hit capable. With the new spellcasting items and the equipment upgrades, everyone was pretty survivable and everyone generally had something to contribute in combat - even Faris. We had used few enough resources that we went directly down to Kraken. I ran from pretty much nothing and the party was gaining level 20 before Kraken.

My battle with Kraken was okay. Nobody got outright crushed as I've had happen in the past. The first round was a buff round, and Galuf ended up using both FOG2 charges. After round 1, Bartz was attacking and Lenna was using LIT3 and they both made lots of big numbers show up.
Beat Kraken using big numbers. It's super effective!

Entering the Mirage Tower is always one of my favourite parts because of all of the great equipment you find. Even with just one effectively class-changed character, it was still enjoyable! Bartz got access to the Dragon Armor, the Aegis Shield, and the Sun Sword when we choose to use that, with promise of a Heal Helmet coming up soon. Nobody else really had anything to gain here.
Pretty nice armor loadout after getting Aegis Shield. Bartz will want a ProRing, too.

Blue D managed to kill Faris but Galuf revived them and we proceeded. We fought a fair number of enemies and got some chests, including the last ProRing we needed and an additional Heal Helmet. I was really overthinking which armors to keep. I couldn't decide whether to drop something for the ProCape or not - or what it would be - so I skipped all of the treasure after the Adamant entirely. We started gaining level 22 on Tiamat's bridge and didn't run into WarMech.

For my battle with Tiamat, I really wanted to one-shot her with poison. Between Galuf's Bane Sword and Lenna's BANE spell, we attempted to suffocate her six times and none worked. I decided to stick with more traditional violence and we did that without any real issue, the fight was just more drawn-out than it needed to be. I began the violence process and eventually Galuf went back to using the Bane Sword again. Tiamat - who is weak to the poison element - resisted Bane nine times in this battle. Ah well. We won.
Tiamat did not want to be BANEd.

Then we went and got Xcalber.
We are ready for the final dungeon in the next session.
