Final Fantasy VIII Classic Jobs Part III

On July 6, I picked up from most of the way through Timber's questline. Really, there wasn't much more to it: I had to watch the scenes at the TV station and then take a train out of town. I got to see this sick Vampire Survivors reference though!:

It's a joke.
There's not really that much happening as you leave Timber, gameplay-wise.

I actually took a lengthy detour at this part: keeping in mind I last played this game roughly 20 years ago, I still remember how much I despised the proliferation of the "random" rule in Triple Triad. So I went up to Dollet and screwed around with sidequests with little payoff and a touch of save scumming to eliminate random. Sidequests in this game in general don't have much payoff, given that equipment doesn't really exist and all serious progression happens based on fighting enemies.
There were some new enemies though, so that was nice!

We were able to stock our thief with 100 Floats and scored a couple of Shear Feathers to give us access to Aero as well.
It took a long time to get to and from Dollet, but then we had another dream.

Now this was a little bit interesting because I've only been stocking for three characters: whoever happens to be my thief, white mage and black mage at the time. I happened to have chosen Quistis and Rinoa to travel with Squall because they had the lowest levels, and consequently Selphie entered the dream with no spells to junction.
I set Kiros as my thief, Laguna as my black mage, and Ward as my white mage.

By drawing new spells for Laguna, who started with none because of what happened with Quistis, I realized I'd be able to use a set of low-level elemental spells to outfit a knight eventually.

And, as we proceeded through this area, we were able to get Shell and Protect from Gespers and Dispel from an Elastoid. Then, probably because Laguna had crept over level 20, we started encountering soldiers who came with -ara level spells.

We finished that up and proceeded to Galbadia Garden. I explored a bit, but besides a couple of draw points I didn't find anything good... so we just got on with the plotline, such as it is.

I got a tutorial around this point about switching party members.

What struck me about this is that I think I've accidentally gotten my levels really high. Squall is just over 20 and most others are in the low teens, but this tutorial shows them around level 6. I must've spent a long time wandering waiting for my money outside of Balamb.
Battles in this area still had new enemies. Some of them were pretty annoying. Status issues started to become ubiquitous... on both sides.

Part of what's strange about this is I don't think I even have a way to draw Blind to protect myself from this.
The rest of the time, besides some uninteresting random battles, was checking out Deling City. While it's still sort of cool exploring a city you've seen in a dream before, once again, there just isn't much to actually do in these large cities. We headed over to the tomb... where we'll be able to get a knightly GF which might complicate our party composition somewhat. I'm really excited for the substantial attack boost it ought to offer, though.
