Final Fantasy "Ban Something" Part V

Reeling from the huge mistake of the previous session, I got some feedback that some of the under-utilized Melmond equipment, such as Falchions and/or Long Swords might help. I agreed, although that's still pretty suboptimal. Oh well; this is more interesting.
I died here, here, here, and here. Those were my 5th through 8th total defeats so far in this challenge.
The second one was both, I think, incredibly entertaining and incredibly sad. I had gone through every forest tile around Crescent Lake and came into the fight in good condition, but without magic. Selected quotes:

Session 5 was pretty fun. I was on the fence about returning to the Marsh Cave to get the Silver Bracelet, but LordMorgren was in the Twitch chat and helped convince me. At the very least, it saves a shop visit. The Marsh Cave isn't particularly scary anymore, so that went well enough. In order to account for the huge mistake mentioned earlier as well as ELQUEMANDA4's rule, I decided I was going to hit up the shops of Crescent Lake. I skipped the shops in Melmond for now, which was probably a mistake. Crescent Lake has good things! Notably, weapon and armor upgrades for Wood, Tick and Mars.
Thus begins a bit of a saga, of how my party who are always carrying around one dead friend who lost access to their best equipment who are unable to run away and need to walk through every single forest tile tried to get to Crescent Lake.

"Oh no. Imagine if I died HERE. That would be very sad."
"I demand that you all try this challenge so that I can have my revenge."
Despite the tragedy in this scenario, it was also very encouraging; I had gotten so close that I went ahead with further attempts without revising the loadout or plan significantly.
The fourth time, the line was, "This is gonna be a... a crappy fight. Like, someone's gonna die here. Possibly two someones! Possibly three someones!"

I think next time I play I'll probably... still try and go to Crescent Lake. I haven't nearly satisfied Wood's need to appreciate nature. However, I might spend a teensy bit of money in Melmond to improve the odds.
