2018 was my second year participating in the Final Fantasy V Four Job Fiesta, and it happens that I did two runs. They overlapped a bit, with one being streamed from my PC and the other being played on GBA (which started earlier).

I registered on July 19, 2018 on my gaming-oriented Twitter account, and played this one using an emulated Final Fantasy V Advance on my PC. My other playthrough was set up using a different, less-gaming-oriented Twitter account and, unlike this one, it wasn't streamed at all. Thus, the other run ended up being considerably less well-documented although I frequently discussed it while streaming this run.

This run was registered using #regChaos and #natural, although that's a bit of a lie as, for the first time with FF5, I modified the save file to access the specified jobs right away. I also used the job fair to completely control the jobs. I knew wanted other "most common" Final Fantasy jobs, like a second wave of my "Classic" challenge series.

I ended up picking Bard, Summoner, Ninja, Monk and I modified my save game so that I had access to these classes from the very beginning. I don't remember why I skipped over Dragoon but I skipped Warrior/Fighter because it doesn't exist in FF5 and skipped Red Mage because it doesn't exist in Final Fantasy Tactics.

This is the sidebar I eventually ended up using in these streams:

As always (for me), the initial setup didn't go perfectly. I was struggling with sound settings and such and then ended up that I couldn't even beat the introductory goblin battles with Bartz as a Bard. It turns out this is because he was lacking initial equips as a consequence of his premature job change, so things actually got underway at about the 7-minute mark.

I mashed the button through cutscenes and even used fast-forward liberally, especially since I had just played the game. Having jobs available from the beginning, particularly advanced ones, was very new and different to me. I enjoyed the feeling, although you don't gain any actual Summon abilities until Walse and no bard songs until even later.

I died (again?) at one point about 30 minutes in. I had wanted to be level 6 before going into Torna Canal, and I knew that there was a spot directly outside of the canal where enemies from Walse show up and provide better experience. I didn't realize they had the capacity to total my team. I hadn't saved for a bit so I had to play a part over, and then I wasn't taking risks. I decided to grind inside the Wind Shrine for that rare chance at the epic accessory known as Leather Shoes and ended up getting to level 8. Level 8 is really high for this part of game, especially when the jobs aren't awful, but at least it would save me some trouble with Garula and other potentially tough early parts.

In the ship graveyard, I got a dagger as a lucky drop from a skeleton which finally made my ninja's damage useful - isn't it odd that the first town, Tule, sells rods, staves and swords, but no knives or daggers? How peculiar that those are actually kind of hard to get at the start of the game! By the end of ship graveyard, I actually had four daggers: one for the bard, one for the summoner, and two for the ninja. This was pretty much optimal, I suppose.

Toward the end of the ship graveyard, I grinded a bit on the Mindflusher enemies - the floating head fellas. They have some chance of dropping ninja scrolls, which you normally wouldn't get until a bit later, and I figured they could really trivialize a good few bosses in the near future. It took a long time to get my first - I was level 12 by then - but the second and third came fairly quickly. I was level 13, which I think is stupidly high for this point, but at least I was feeling prepared.

The Siren battle was over in seconds, before she had a chance to switch forms, and I didn't even end up throwing a scroll or anything else with the ninja. I also accidentally killed Magissa before Forza/Faltzer showed up without really intending to.

Getting to Walse felt great. I was able to get a couple of summon abilities, but I also realized that the ninja's smoke ability would allow me to do the Jackanapes dungeon easily to nab a very useful Elven Mantle, and the flame scrolls I had found would allow me to beat Shiva early. With the high levels and that extra prep, Garula wasn't hard at all.
