This third session of Final Fantasy VII with a team made up exclusively of a knight, a white mage, some thieves, and some black mages was played at night on January 12, 2024.
We did the Kalm town flashback thing. I actually threw on the "no encounters" mode that exists in some newer ports of this game and consequently only did one battle with Sephiroth in the team. I tried to rush it but it's still pretty time consuming - and cool when you're trying to appreciate it, but I wasn't. We bought a couple of things in Kalm and then proceeded to the Chocobo Farm. I actually needed to fight a handful of random battles in the area because I forgot I needed 2000 gil for the Chocobo Lure materia.
My first chocobo battle was an awesome formation with a little grass fella and one bird guy, and it was a back attack! It would've been convenient, but I accidentally hit the chocobo. It took a few extra attempts.

However, we didn't make it across the swamp on our first attempt.

I was actually kind of surprised at how well we held up against Midgar Zolom, but eventually we had to escape. We made it across the swamp more successfully on our second try.

I fought a few random battles outside of Junon, and recruited Yuffie who I eventually decided would be called "Yufflee" because Final Fantasy thieves sometimes have a "flee" ability. I could've gone with Thieffie but I think that would've felt silly with Thiefa on the team already.
I stole a Grand Glove in the Mythril Mines and a Boomerang from the jet-looking fellows outside. The other random battles here were on the tough side and we had to run a few times. I wanted a bit more money for shopping in upper Junon, but I wasn't sure we were really profiting in these battles because of the amount of healing required.
Next up was Bottomswell. The thing complicating this battle, although it didn't come into play, was that if Aerice was affected by the bubble/Waterpolo attack we wouldn't really have any way to dissolve the Waterpolo because they can only be affected by magical attacks. It took a long time and Cloud couldn't contribute much, but it was fine.

We did our terrible, arguably dangerous representation of the CPR procedure and then rode a dolphin for a bit. I actually swam into the electrified tower two or three times; I am not sure I have literally ever done that.

We did okay in Junon. I bought a Hardedge, and we grabbed Seal and Revive materia. We won a Grenade from the march, and we won a Force Stealer from the send-off - I really wanted the HP Plus materia! Oh well, a Force Stealer is also a nice prize although it makes me feel a bit stupid for just purchasing the Hardedge.
On the ship, I took an opportunity to steal some Shinra Betas, which is great because we hadn't acquired any Carbon Bangles. While there was little danger, it took ages. We acquired five of them altogether.

With all of the time spent stealing and the healing required for that, I was grateful for the special healing drink guy on the ship's deck. I don't think I've ever used that before.

We grabbed the All materia and the Twin Viper and then found Sephiroth and thus JENOVA Birth. I tried out pretty much every elemental attack at my disposal trying to find a weakness, but I guess there isn't one that I'm able to abuse. I settled into Aerice casting Quake which does a fair bit more damage than the other basic elemental attacks.

We looked around Costa Del Sol but there was nothing particularly noteworthy for us there besides the Motor Drive and Fire Ring, both of which might come in handy later. We saved outside the town.
So far it's been very manageable having such a limited set of abilities and party configurations. Generally, we have Cloud who just attacks, Barret on healing duty, and we rotate between having a thief or a black mage in the party. The black mages are much more generally useful but there is a fair distribution of good stealable items through the game so we're swapping the party a fair bit.
