Final Fantasy VII Classic Jobs Part V

I played this fifth session on January 15, 2024. Despite a fair length of playtime it sure doesn't feel like I accomplished very much!
We started in Rocket Town. We got Barrier materia for Cloud and Barriert, got the Yoshiyuki and the Drill Arm, and then met up with Palmer.

The battle with Palmer is a pretty easy one. I tried casting Barrier here, which was fun because it was new, but this battle is a bit of a joke and I believe all of Palmer's attacks are considered magical anyway.

We recruited Cid here, but I named him "Rancid". It's multi-faceted! I referenced noted punk band Rancid and their anti-establishment nature, and the fact that thieves in Final Fantasy are known for running (thus "ran"). It makes total sense.
I backtracked to Cosmo Canyon to get some HP Plus and MP Plus materia that I had skipped earlier. I was thinking there were at least a few materia I wanted from Battle Square in part 1/disc 1 and that having high HP on Cloud, plus D.Blow-HP Absorb would make for a fairly good strategy. I may have overestimated this but time will tell.
Since I wanted HP Absorb for this, I thought I ought to do Wutai. Getting there was no problem. I chased Yuffie around, mostly with x3 speed active, and that wasn't too bad. However... I didn't expect Rapps to be a challenge.

Rapps' Aero 3 attack was doing 1500+ damage, and I don't think we survived it even once. I don't recall this being an issue in my past playthroughs! It had me questioning whether I was underlevelled. Eventually, I lost pace with the healing and got my third game over of this playthrough.
I had to backtrack a bit, which was annoying, but it didn't actually set me back particularly far. For the second attempt, the big strategic changes were (a) avoiding spellcasting items, which really weren't that strong, (b) entering with Fury status on all members, and (c) trying to use Lunatic High with Red XIII in the early going. It was still a challenge; a bit of a race to keep the team upright.

We won on the second attempt although it wasn't easy. I don't recall struggling here in 2022 and I wonder what the big difference was. Am I underlevelled? No idea.
I had sort of a semi-intentional grind as I left. The Wutai overworld is a nice place to fight since it's semi-balanced for characters with no materia, they drop tons of good consumable items and they trigger limit breaks like crazy... or at least that's what I kept telling myself. It was also an opportunity to steal Adaman Bangles which can be good for my thieves.

As I said, I fought arbitrary battles in this area for a while. Besides a fair heap of levels and X-Potions I am not sure I actually gained very much of note. I triggered the Keystone quest and saved outside of the Gold Saucer, which will be our destination next time we play, both to get the Keystone and possibly to do a bit of Battle Square if it's not too frustrating.
