The seventh session of the seventh game! On the nineteenth day of the first month!
I really hustled in this session, in my opinion. I didn't get too distracted by sidequests and I'm suddenly feeling quite far in the game. This is also probably helped by the fact that it was 3 hours of gameplay, which is uncommon for me.
I went through the icy cave that kind of bugged out of me previously and got through without issue. We were able to proceed to Icicle Inn, also stopping briefly to grab a few Carob Nuts from some dinosaur fellas; I think it's important that we eventually get (at least) a green chocobo because the Ancient Forest has Slash-All, Apocalypse, and Spring Gun / Spriggan Clip.
At Icicle Inn, I drew attention to the fact that Elena pretty much always knocks me out with her fierce punch. Today, I dodged it. It was very exciting.

I hope the FF7 Remake series changes the snowboarding minigame to a minigame where you control Elena tumbling down the hill as an increasingly large snowball. Speaking of minigame, naturally, that came next.

In the glacier, I managed to get the Added Cut materia and the All materia on my first trip, even making it through to the climber's cabin before passing out. I went back hoping for the Safety Bit and maybe the Alexander materia, but I couldn't find my way and didn't want to keep screwing around with it, so I decided to proceed instead.
On the cliffs, we had a pretty terrible fight with a Malboro in the early going, so it felt good to blast the subsequent ones.

I had pulled out my original BradyGames strategy guide during the snowfields, which is funny, because it's one of the worst parts of that guide - the Added Cut materia isn't even mentioned, let alone labelled on the map. It was actually handy just to make sure I wasn't missing anything here, although I found the only out-of-the-way treasure among the cliffs - the Ribbon - on my own.
The Icicle battles were somewhat annoying. I think back in 2022 I had used either Beta or Ifrit to beat these instantly, but it was harder now. Having Red XIII cast Fire2 wasn't great, especially with the bat allies occasionally inflicting silence. It didn't take long for me to switch to mostly using normal attacks and occasional limit breaks.

It was quite funny seeing the Icicle fall down after Cloud used Finishing Touch for the first time.

I recalled being beaten by Stilvas back in 2022, so I made sure my team had some protective equipment on. Anticipating the Schizo fight as well, I had Cloud wearing his Dragon Armlet, and a Fire Ring and Fire Armlet on the other two characters. We only encountered one Stilva and it didn't have an opportunity to use Magic Breath. Schizo was quite easy and Thiefa joined in to steal a Protect Ring.

As we approached the crater, Cloud thought he should pose for a photo. Classic Cloud.

The Whirlwind Maze was okay. Oddly, I had two run-ins with the first wind wall but passed the other two on my first try. Besides the plot, and with consideration for the materia I'm actually allowed to use, this area holds little interest for me. I do like the little Japanese-speaking fellas though.

We had kept our fire-resistant equips on (intentionally) so JENOVA*Death was really easy. Tifa beat it with some Yeah! reels.

We did the bit ol' act break of cutscenes, including some really good ones. Tifa, like Cloud, posed for a photo at a strange time.

I had been considering getting a green chocobo now, but it would probably require a lot of save-scumming, and a lot of money that I don't really have right now. I chose to pretty much focus on the main quests until Cloud re-joins the team. I did try to take a side-trip to visit the Chocobo Sage to grab the Contain materia in Mideel - which I did, eventually - but I got distracted and decided get Fort Condor out of the way first.
This final event at Fort Condor can be pretty quick. I used to always try to win but you get the Imperial Guard if you lose the tactical minigame battle thing, so I fought Commander Grand Horn instead. He is a joke, as ever.

After grabbing Contain, we went to Corel. I really enjoy this quest; it's not hard but it's cool the way the game responds to your timing and decision making and it makes the stakes feel really high. Good job, whoever designed this.
Using Rancid is a bit funny because I literally hadn't used him since the part where we had no materia in Wutai, and his only limit break is Boost Jump. Still, since we got Added Cut our thieves have been pretty effective in battle. On a related note, we stole the Warrior Bangle from Eagle Gun.

With that, we got the Ultima materia and Barret's Catastrophe limit break - which he immediately learned! - and returned to Mideel. We held up adequately against Ultimate Weapon and even stole its Curse Ring right before it flew away.

We did Cloud and Tifa's entire journey of self-discovery... pretty quickly. Cloud rejoined and we made a team. In the next session I think we'll focus on sidequest-type things like chocobos.

Isn't one person supposed to say, "This train we on ain't got no stops!"?
