We're starting this play session from after our first battle in the Zeklaus Desert. Keep in mind that there were a few mostly-minor changes made to the game for this run, which were described in the previous session's write-up. This one was played on January 7, 2018.

We looked at some shops (where the most exciting purchase was a Thunder Rod) and then ran into a random battle at Mandalia Plains. That battle was good; there were three panthers and a chocobo, where I charmed one panther and Bolt 2'd the chocobo into oblivion right off the bat. It was a quick one, and it allowed Lenna to learn Magic Attack Up.

Next was Thieves' Fort. I like this map. Early on, Algus and Delita got killed again (as they do) and Lenna used her empowered Bolt spell to bring Miluda to 1 HP. I decided to revive Delita with Krile, saying, "I don't know why I'm trying to revive Delita, he'll just to something idiotic." Immediately, naked level 2 chemist Delita ran up and punched Miluda to death. I didn't really want the battle to end at this point, but whatever!
Naked chemist hero Delita!

Then... another random battle at Mandalia Plains. It was simple, and we ended up with a lone, badly speed-broken chocobo. I tried to let Faris take the most actions here, given her lower level.

After some plot, we went to Lenalia Plateau. Delita charged out front and the enemy time mage and black mage both trained spells on him, but Faris tactfully seduced the black mage to negate that situation.
Seduction is always an option.
We landed a very effective Bolt 2 spell, and then Delita the naked level 2 chemist then decided to punch a knight in the face. This battle stayed unremarkable, though by the end I narrowed the battle down to Miluda with badly broken speed such that Delita the naked chemist would walk around using potions and punching Miluda to gain a bit of JP. I thought it was important for Delita to provide a bit of spillover chemist JP so my other characters could use a few more items; good to do this while we still have a guest character around.
Delita grinding JP for the party... very slowly.
By the end of the battle, my entire team had access to Phoenix Down. Ramza/Faris also learned Move +2, Bartz got access to Weapon Break, and Krile learned both Magic Defend Up and Cure 2.

At the Fovoham windmill battle, we learned that Wiegraf's chocobo, Boco, is immune to charm in this battle. Wiegraf took out Delita and Krile on his first turn. Lenna intentionally struck Faris with a Bolt 2 to damage all of the units surrounding him, which was an interesting gambit.
Lightning gambit!
Despite this strong offense, I ended up in a situation where my only living unit was Bartz the knight against Wiegraf and Boco. He tried to revive the team, but we weren't fast enough, especially given Wiegraf's considerable damage. Faris turned into a crystal, and we got our first game over.

I tried again; it's interesting that this battle is challenging, because unlike so many battles in this game most of the enemy units are female, which puts us at a minor disadvantage. It's a well-known fact that a majority of human enemies in this game are male, which means Steal Heart is considerably more useful on female units; Ramza has no chance of affecting this battle with a well-placed charm. Anyway, we jumped in much more slowly, carefully avoided positioning our units on the same height to mitigate the threat of Stasis Sword, and the second run was much better.

Given I removed Wiegraf's innate Maintenance/Safeguard, I was even able to break his weapon eventually! That made a difference here, although this second attempt was already going my way.
Bartz broke Wiegraf's sword.
We finished up with Lenna blasting both Faris and Wiegraf with lightning.

Our first attempt at Fort Zeakden was also a game over. This was a mixture of bad movement at the beginning (setting three of my units to be hit by a multi-target spell) and some bad luck (like a Steal Heart failing). I did benefit from Delita being knocked out and then having in-battle dialogue that brought him back to 1 HP, but that wasn't enough.
Bartz couldn't hold off five enemies on his own.

For attempt 2, I decided to pull back Faris to more tightly group the team, and focus more properly on Algus. Having my units in good condition to target Algus with an empowered Bolt 2 was ultimately all it took.
Algus got electrocuted by Lenna.

With that, we finished chapter 1, raided equipment from our new party members and made sure that Agrias and Gafgarion were going to be appropriately naked chemists, and saved up.
